More memories...
Probably the last lunch counter in LR was in the Town and County Shopping Center at Asher and University in the drug store. It was run by Gill, the brother of the Drug store's owner. I think it has only been closed about 10 or 12 years. The Super Burger was outstanding, as was the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich (smothered in gravy, with fries and a small salad.) During the 60's we ate there once a week.
After Herb's BarBQ moved to the Fair Park Blvd location we got take out there once a week, too. I don't recall the sauce having mustard in it, though. I hate mustard and wouldn't have eaten it!
Before that we ate at Sam's diner across the street from Herb's. That building later housed the first location of Beans & Grains & Things, then The Press Box. Is it still there now?
Great memories...
(I graduated from Central in 1970)

I love your website!
The 3 Lido's were owned by G.O. Harper. After he sold the Lido Minute Man to Wes Hall, he opened Black
Angus across from War Memorial Stadium where Subway is now. He later opened another Black Angus location on Cantrell near Mississippi. I believe it stayed open quite a while after the Markham Street location closed.
Several years after that location closed, the wife of one of his relatives (maybe a nephew? I don't think it was his son, Neil, but it could have been) opened a Black Angus (almost the exact same menu--different prices) on University Avenue where Pizza Hut used to be near 19th Street/Boyle Park Road. She later opened another BA on Rodney Parham. It was there several years after the University Avenue location closed, But I think it, too, is closed now.

I have been devouring this website for (tooo many hours) after my stepdaughter found it while searching for the name of an old BBQ place in Little Rock. Mr. Merritt has obviously devoted uncountable hours in the making and I will be forever grateful for this walk down memory lane. Class of '63, Little Rock Central High School.

Google Inc. is an American multinational public corporation invested in Internet search, cloud computing, and advertising technologies. Google hosts and develops a number of Internet-based services and products,[5] and generates profit primarily from advertising through its AdWords program.[6][7] The company was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, often dubbed the "Google Guys",[8][9][10] while the two were attending Stanford University as PhD candidates. It was first incorporated as a privately held company on September 4, 1998, and its initial public offering followed on August 19, 2004. At that time Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt agreed to work together at Google for twenty years, until the year 2024.[11] The company's mission statement from the outset was "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful",[12] and the company's unofficial slogan – coined by Google engineer Amit Patel[13] and supported by Paul Buchheit – is "Don't be evil".[14][15] In 2006, the company moved to its current headquarters in Mountain View, California.
It has been estimated that Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world,[16] and processes over one billion search requests[17] and about twenty-four petabytes of user-generated data every day.[18][19][20][21] Google's rapid growth since its

You continue to do SUCh a fine #@*%! with this ite! A few adds under bizzes? You mention a drugstore at Kavanaugh/Beech. There were 2: Gannaway's on SW corner; Churchman's on SW corner. Latter became Churchman-Rhea, then just (Roy) Rhea Drugs. Popular millinery downtown w/many radio ads was Ila Lowe. Seems like Joe's Hobby Shop began at Hillcrest, later was at Park Plaza. On trading stamps? Sadeway have out Gold Bond for Sandy-Saver Redeemed on Main. LR's first enclosed shopping center was the Arcade Bldg. downtown opposite the Carnegie Library, between 6th & 7th on Louisiana and Center. Later, the block became the Downtowner Motor Inn. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for doing this website. I lived in N. Little Rock when I was a kid (until I was 9). My parents operated a "cafe" called the "2-Way Cafe) on the East side of Main Street at the foot of the Main Street bridge in Little Rock. In 1948, my daddy who had dreams of having a "white tablecloth" restaurant opened a restaurant at 810 Main called "Hollie's". He was bankfupt within a year. My mother went to work for Snodgrass and Bracy Drug Store at 110 Main St. as the fountain manager. My daddy worked for the Sterling Department Store but died in 1950. My mother and I then moved to Oklahoma City in 1952. I really had a great time basically running down Main Street, going to movies at the Main, New, Roxy, Capitol and Center. Went to see Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett at the Robinson Auditorium and another boy and I followed them to their hotel (Grady Manning) and went up to their room and met them. We were wearing our Cub Scout uniforms so they invited is in. In the summer time, we played a lot down by the river. Shudder to think of it now. Really enjoy your website as it brings back such good memories.

This site is wonderful, and could be found interesting to several generations who either lived in those days, or would have a connection in some way, to the "Rock City" of old
I love your writing/storytelling style. The story of the BS Tie was my favorite!
I graduated from LRCHS, class of 67. Many memories in these pages, but I also learned a lot reading through them as well. Thanks for your efforts, I can tell it is a labor of love.

I came across an old family album at an Estate Sale a few years back. It has many pictures of Mabelvale High School students from the Class of '47-'48. Pictures with names like Robert "Sparky" Sparks, June James,Hugh Smith,Clifford Autry, the ASTC Trio. Just wondering if anyone out there knew about these people, and if they are still around. It seems some guy named Harry took a lot of pictures

Memories. :) You mentioning Snappy's and Sweden Cream reminds me of our weekend nights in the mid/late 60s. (I met my wife at Sweden Cream April Fools night. We are still married.) We would cruise from Dairyland in North Little Rock, through the Razorback Inn, over the bridge to Little Rock and through Snappy Service (Snappy's) to The Band Box, then back through, several times! One night, during the 'cruise', the line of cars was backed up so far on Broadway to get into Snappy's that cops were handing out parking tickets! Snappy's was a drive-in, where you ordered food and drinks from your car, so it usually took several trips around the block to get a parking spot. You would back in, so you could watch the hotrods (and let them see yours!). At that time, I had a new 1966 yellow Chevy Impala SS, so my girlfriend and I were pretty cool. LOL

Raymond,
Just stumbled across your website while searching for something else entirely. Fantastic job of capturing the era. While I didn't attend Mabelvale High (K-12 = Peabody - where Federal Bldg now stands on Capitol Ave - Forest Park, Forest Heights and Hall - class of '64) I found the wealth of information (and the memories it brought back) from the Little Rock we knew from the 1950's and 1960's highly enjoyable. How many times did we buy school books from Allsopp & Chapel on Main Street???? There are many other places and names that flood back from the years - too many, in fact, to go into here. Just want to say, "Thank you" for publishing and maintaing this web site. BTW, have forwarded this to my father, who grew up in L.R. - attending Forest Park, Pulaski Heights and Central - class of '48. I'm quite sure they will appreciate it ever bit as much as I have. Take care, DC

Just found the Mabelvale website and I think it will be a great way to find and communicate with our former classmates. My wife Shirley Clowers was a 1959 graduate.
I was supposed to graduate from Central, but went to Mabelvale my junior and senior years. I made some very good friends those years and see several of them on a fairly regularly basis.
Carolyn Cannon Cornett was my wife's cousin and is deceased, also Joyce Huey West is also deceased. Joyce's sister goes to church where I attend.

Ran across this link at the Hall High lost year site. I was one of the students who attended Mablevale when the schools were closed in Little Rock (we started at Mablevale 5 weeks late, got there just in time for 6-weeks exams!)and were no doubt a challenge to the teachers and administrators. Later, 1964-1965, I taught Biology, Physical Science, and Algebra I at Mablevale, following graduation at Little Rock University (now UALR).
